    Aletheia VCU Launch

    Monday, August 31st, 2009

phil 2This past Wednesday we launched a midweek service back on the campus of VCU. Our desire is for it to be our central point of connection with university, while also utilizing it a straining ground  for the next generation of Aletheia Richmond leaders, pastors, teachers, and musicians. I was expecting to start off slow, with maybe a small group of around 25 or 30. Jesus graciously granted us about 75-80 student our first night. But the most amazing things was the large amount of new faces that rolled through the doors of the RIchmond Solon in the upstairs of the Commons.

group singingIf you have a chance please pray that God would raise up new bible teachers and musicians to lead the gathering and to be equipped to plant churches in the Aletheia Network across the country. Our desire  is not  see this gathering  become a stagnant pond but rather a flowing river of students passionate about making the name of Jesus great on the campus of VCU.

So as many of you know, “Welcome Week” is a huge time for collegiate  church planting. It is a chance to connect with students, get your name out to the greater campus body, and most importantly share about the most amazing Person in the world. Jesus! This was the 3rd such “Welcome Weeks” for Aletheia VCU. This year we planned to pull out all the stops. We were more organized than ever (thanks to my wonderful staff, interns, and the creativity of Carrie and Nathaneal). Yet for all our planning and sick promotion we still hit a few speed bumps: 1. It is extreme hard to schedule events on campus during this week because the university is also seeking to throw a ton of events (note: If you have an event scheduled at the same time the university does… you will lose). 2. New students are saturated with opportunities to check campus organization, club, and events. 3. It is easier to plan on paper than to execute in reality.

Though we had some speed bumps, we were still able to connect with hundreds of students and share the good news of Jesus with a number of them. Every year we seem to get better and better at anticipating what will draw students. I think the key this years was not so much the events but rather all the Aletheia peeps that came out to support each event. Our core group was amazing at connecting, loving, and showing genuine interest in the new students that came out to each event. The Philippians 2 Philosophy  of the Aletheia Network was in full effect. It is amazing how when you live out teaching of the bible, God shows up. Thanks to everyone  who prayed, planned, and participated in “Welcome Week 2009.”

    Welcome Week 2009

    Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

This weekend thousands of students from the graduating class of 2013 will descend in the campus of VCU. Freshman Week is a huge time for our Aletheia Churches all over the country. It is an opportunity to serve another generation of students that are extremely valuable  to God and His mission of reaching the world with Good News of Jesus.

I have seen over the last two years how important it is for students to get involve immediately with a solid Christian community. In the first month of college you are making connections with people that will influence for better or worse, the course of your life. God’s words to us in Psalm 1 confirms this truth:

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season,  whose leaf also shall not wither;  and whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

So pray for the leadership of all the Aletheia Churches (JMU, VCU, ODU, & USF) as they tirelessly plan, for the volunteers who sacrificially serve, and the incoming freshman, that they hear the gospel and respond with repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
